What Are the Different Types of Die Tool Materials?

The use of molds is very wide, and the work requirements for various die tool steels are different, and there are also various performance requirements. Therefore, according to the working conditions of the molds produced, the die tool steels are divided into several categories. So how many categories of die tool steels are there? What are the uses of these categories of die tool steels?

die tool steels can generally be divided into cold work die steels, hot work die steels, and plastic die tool steels according to their uses.

Cold work die steels

Cold work die steels are mainly used to manufacture molds for pressing and forming workpieces at cold states, such as cold punching dies, cold stamping dies, cold deep drawing dies, embossing dies, cold extrusion dies, thread pressing dies, and powder pressing dies, etc.

Cold work die steels range extensively from various carbon tool steels, alloy tool steels, high-speed tool steels to powder high-speed tool steels and powder high-alloy die tool steels.

Hot work die steels

Hot work die steels are mainly used to manufacture molds for pressure processing of workpieces at high temperatures, such as hot forging dies, hot extrusion dies, die casting dies, hot upset forging dies, etc.

Commonly used hot work die steels include alloy die tool steels with medium and high carbon content and added alloy elements such as Cr, W, Mo, V, etc.; for special requirements, high-alloy austenite heat-resistant die tool steels are sometimes used.

Plastic die tool steels

Due to the variety of plastics and the differences in the requirements for plastic products, different material requirements have been put forward for manufacturing plastic molds. Therefore, many industrialized countries have formed a series of widely used steel grades for plastic mold.

These include carbon structural steels, carburizing plastic die tool steels, pre-hardened plastic die tool steels, age-hardening plastic die tool steels, corrosion-resistant plastic die tool steels, easy-cutting plastic die tool steels, integrally quenched plastic die tool steels, martensitic age-hardening steels, and mirror polishing plastic die tool steels, etc.

Non-magnetic die tool steels

Non-magnetic die tool steel is a kind of high-manganese and vanadium series die tool steel, which can maintain stable austenite in various states. It has a very low magnetic permeability, high hardness and strength, good wear resistance, and after suitable aging treatment after solid solution, it has good comprehensive properties. It has physical characteristics such as good plasticity, high toughness, large processing hardening tendency, large thermal expansion coefficient, high electrical resistivity, low thermal conductivity, and low magnetic properties. It is widely used in non-magnetic buildings, non-magnetic machinery, ore mining equipment, and military fields.

Steel companies should seize the opportunity to develop new varieties of die tool steels with high precision, high toughness, corrosion resistance, and high quality according to the trend of China's mold manufacturing industry development and the needs of the mold market, so as to make China's hot and cold work die steels reach the world advanced level.

We believe that in the future, the quality and technology of the die tool steel we produce will become better and better, and the die tool steel market will achieve faster and better development. This will lead China's die tool steel industry to a higher level of development.
